Designing Against Crime: Crime Prevention
Through Environmental Design (CPTED)

Statistics gathered by the U.S. Department of Justice consistently
show parking lots as a leading location of both violent and non-violent
crime. With the safety of employees, customers and the general public
at stake, parking facility owners and managers are increasingly
adopting informal principles known collectively as "Crime Prevention
Through Environmental Design" (CPTED) to deter criminal acts
on their premises.
Today,CPTED generally refers to what researchers termed the"built
environment,"which is recognized as the physical, constructed
features of a public place.Newman thought that each such physical
place be considered a "defensible space"to be designed
with features that would deter criminals.
