Pedestrian Safety on Hospital Campuses: Preventing Preventable
Accidents

Hospital campuses are special places. Whether urban or suburban,
they serve as a kind of refuge where important work such as saving
lives and improving the quality of lives take place. They attract
unique concentrations of patients, visitors, employees, physicians,
and vendors. They also attract cars. Lots of cars.
Motorists at hospital campuses have one goal: finding the most
convenient parking spot as quickly and easily as possible. Mission
accomplished, they morph into on-campus pedestrians with one goal:
finding the quickest and most direct footpath from parking spot
to destination. While we would like to think that both goal-driven
motorists and pedestrians traverse the campus with respect and concern
for each other's often-conflicting desires. This is generally not
the case.
