In November 2003 the ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) 10th World Congress And Exhibition was held in Madrid Spain. Of the 176 sessions at the World Congress only two were devoted to parking. Although this was a little disappointing, the two parking sessions did provide the audience with some exciting developments within the parking industry as well as a glimpse into what we can expect in the future. The presentations and vendor exhibits fit into three main categories: electronic payment systems for parking, maximizing parking resources, and technology that automates parking the vehicle into the parking space.

This article will be the first of three covering the sessions and exhibits at the world congress. It focuses on the developments in electronic payment systems (EPS) for parking.
