Nestled along the coastline of the Mid-Atlantic, the "first state" of Delaware has long been known as home to chemical giant Dupont, and hailed as the nation's "corporation capital" because of its attractive corporate laws and taxes. With the state's favorable legislation regarding credit cards, its center of commerce, Wilmington, has experienced considerable growth in the banking and financial service institutions.

In recent years, the city and state initiated an economic development effort focusing on urban land use renewal and redevelopment along Wilmington's largest river, the Christina.
